Everyone loves a good fairy tale. Disney movies are solid evidence of this. In fact, Disney has done such a great job retelling Hans Christian Anderson’s and the Grimm brother’s Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast, that these Disney versions have become the standard, burying the more original versions into obscurity.
Moreso, the very concept of a fairy tale is being redefined to fit the Disney definition. If there isn’t a princess, a prince, or a happy ending, then it isn’t a fairy tale. To their credit, in recent years Disney has attempted to break the mold a bit by producing new stories such as Frozen and Moana but it will take years before the collective memory begins to accept new Disney fairy tale norms, especially as princesses have been their bread and butter for a number of years.
